WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WKBW) - Customers are lining up for fall favorites at Mayer Brothers Cider Mill, at 1540 Seneca Creek Road, in West Seneca. After all, it's a tradition. "It's just a little piece of Americana," said Garrett Mayer. "We do donuts and pies and apple cider. That's primarily what we do."

Garrett is vice president at Mayer's. His great, great grandfather Jacob bought the mill back in 1852. Area residents and farmers would bring apples in and leave, saying cheers, with a barrel of apple cider. "They'd drink it while it was fresh for the first two weeks, then stick it in their basement, let it ferment and then they'd drink hard cider," Mayer explains. "That was big until prohibition."

Today, Mayer Brothers is toasting its success, hauling in millions of pounds of apples every season, about 10-20 truckloads everyday. Most are from Niagara and Wayne Counties, with some from North Carolina in early season before the local crop is ripe.

But one thing that has not changed is the cider recipe. It has just one ingredient: apples. "Then products we make for supermarkets have preservatives so they have a longer shelf life," he said.

Along with cider, Mayer Brothers bottles water and more for big name companies, including Tops, Wegmans, Walmart and Arizona Iced Tea, to name a few.

Mayer Brothers employs 120 workers in peak, fall season. "We have the same people coming back and working every fall because they have so much fun," Mayer said. "And I think the customers are going to feel the same way."

But you have just weeks to get to the historic mill, since the craving for fall flavors has its own shelf life. "We're open until Thanksgiving," Mayer said. "Get in here in the next couple of weeks!"

Mayer Brothers is open seven days a week until then. You can reach the mill at 716-668-5260.
