M&T Market Share Keeps Rising

WNY (WKBW) - M&T Bank Corp. has retained its position as the largest bank in Western New York, according to data released today by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

M&T's deposits in the eight most westerly counties of New York totaled $14.3 billion as of June 30, representing 38.9 percent of the region's deposit share. That's up from $11.1 billion in deposits, or 35.8 percent of the deposit share, reported on June 30, 2011.

The information is part of the FDIC's annual deposit market share report.

Last year, Buffalo-based M&T edged long-time leader HSBC Bank USA N.A. in local deposits. HSBC, which sold its entire Upstate New York retail franchise in May to First Niagara Financial Group Inc., is now the third-largest deposit-taker in the region, with $3 billion in deposits, or 8.1 percent of the deposit share. A year ago, the London financial giant held $5.8 billion in local deposits, representing 18.6 percent of the market share.

First Niagara, meanwhile, has captured the No. 2 position on the list, with $8.8 billion in local deposits. That accounts for 23.9 percent of the market share.

In total, 23 banking institutions in the eight counties of Western New York held $36.9 billion in deposits at the end of June.

Based on deposits, the region's banks rank as follows:

• M&T Bank, $14.3 billion in deposits, 38.9 percent of the deposit share.

• First Niagara Bank, $8.8 billion in deposits, 18.6 percent of the deposit share.

• HSBC Bank USA N.A., $3 billion in deposits, 8.1 percent of the deposit share.

• KeyBank N.A., $2.9 billion in deposits, 7.9 percent of the deposit share.

• Citizens Bank, $1.5 billion in deposits, 4.1 percent of the deposit share.

• Bank of America, $1.3 billion in deposits, 3.5 percent of the deposit share.

• Five Star Bank, $931.5 million in deposits, 2.5 percent of the deposit share.

• Community Bank N.A., $868.6 million in deposits, 2.4 percent of the deposit share.

• Evans Bank, $656.8 million in deposits, 1.8 percent of the deposit share.

• Bank of Castile, $499.5 million in deposits, 1.4 percent of the deposit share.

• Northwest Savings Bank, $498.6 million in deposits, 1.4 percent of the deposit share.

• Lake Shore Savings Bank, $388.3 million in deposits, 1.1 percent of the deposit share.

• Alden State Bank, $210.5 million in deposits, 0.6 percent of the deposit share.

• Bank of Akron, $204.5 million in deposits, 0.6 percent of the deposit share.

• Wilmington Trust N.A., $171.9 million in deposits, 0.5 percent of the deposit share.

• Cattaraugus County Bank, $166.6 million in deposits, 0.5 percent of the deposit share.

• Steuben Trust Co., $163.3 million in deposits, 0.4 percent of the deposit share.

• Bank of Holland, $74.8 million in deposits, 0.2 percent of the deposit share.

• JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A., $54.8 million in deposits, 0.2 percent of the deposit share.

• Medina Savings & Loan Association, $38.3 million in deposits, 0.1 percent of the

deposit share.

• First Citizens National Bank, $32.4 million in deposits, 0.1 percent of the deposit share.

• Bank of Cattaraugus, $13.9 million in deposits, 0.04 percent of the deposit share.

• Woodforest National Bank, $3.6 million in deposits, 0.01 percent of the deposit share.
