The construction team for a $12 million, twin-pad Lockport ice rink and a formal groundbreaking ceremony has been set.
The Lockport Ice Rink and Sports Complex board of directors have hired Amherst-based Waterbourne Construction Advisors LLC to oversee the construction of the Chestnut Street facility while local architect James Bammel of Bammel Architects is handling its design. Firland Management of Lewiston, Maine, a nationally recognized ice rink owner and management firm, has been hired as a consultant during the design/preconstruction phases.
Many years in the planning, the company will feature a pair of rinks along with 7,000-square-feet of retail space.
Funding came from a number of sources including $4 million from the Grigg-Lewis Foundation. It has also been tabbed a priority project by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council. A capital campaign is also expected to help raise additional funds for the complex.

Officials hope to have the rinks ready by next September.
