The nonprofit sector is a major economic engine in the Buffalo and Western New York region and continues to grow.
The largest of the organizations together account for more than $2.36 billion in annual revenue and employ nearly 57,000, according to the 2013 Million Dollar Nonprofits, a research report by Business First to be published Nov. 1 inside the All About Nonprofits publication.
People Inc. and the Resource Center in Jamestown remain at the top of the list, each reporting revenue over $100 million.
As in years past, agencies providing services to individuals with disabilities remain the largest in terms of revenue, with 34 organizations accounting for $667 million, or 28 percent of overall dollars.
Four of the top five agencies on the Million Dollar Nonprofits list are agencies that serve individuals with developmental disabilities.
• People Inc., $121 million
• Resource center, $110 million
• Aspire of WNY Inc., $67 million
• Visiting Nursing Association of WNY, $53 million
• Heritage Centers, $43 million
The report, now in its 16th year, includes a range of financial data on nearly 300 organizations that reported revenue of at least $1 million on their federal tax returns for fiscal 2011, the most recent year for which complete data was available.
The All About Nonprofits publication also includes a list of the region's top corporate philanthropists; a ranking of the top foundations, including private, corporate and community foundations; and a listing of charitable events for 2014.
