EDEN, N.Y. (WKBW) - Zittel's greenhouses in Eden are bursting with color. Zittel's grows about 250 different types of flowers and vegetables in three acres of greenhouses, including about 125,000 geraniums and 20,000 hanging baskets.
The Zittel family has been farming for 118 years and growing flowers for 50 years. All winter, they nurtured these plants in 70 degree heat. And now the race is on to deliver the wholesale goods to nurseries across New York.
"We typically ship as far as Utica, into Cortland, predominately all in New York," said Kevin Zittel. "We pride ourselves on being homegrown and keeping locally grown products in our area."
Many WNYers buy flowers from area nurseries and don't realize they were grown in Zittel's greenhouses. The plants are also sold at Zittel's market in Hamburg.
They line the streets of municipalities like Eden, Hamburg and Orchard Park.
Zittel's also grows about one million vegetable plants end up in their own farms. The first crop to come in is lettuce, which should be ready to cut in about two weeks.
