Arthur Dobson, a prominent Buffalo attorney, died following a bicycle accident while in Slovenia.

Dobson, 66, died June 11 one week after being injured while on his annual summer bike trek with longtime friends Carl Montante Sr. and William Huntress. Dobson was injured while swerving to avoid a car.

"My father loved to ride," said Dobson's daughter, Allison. "He golfed and skied, but biking really was his sport. This was one of those split-second things that turned into a terrible, terrible accident."

Dobson was also a racquetball player hitting the court with the likes of Montante and Joseph Romanello - among others.

"Riding kept him in good shape and he just loved being on the bike," Allison Dobson said.

During his annual summer bike vacations with Montante and Huntress, the trio would ride as many as 60 miles a day. Their current trip was to take them through Slovenia, Italy and Croatia.

Even in the Buffalo Niagara region, virtually every Saturday morning it was quite common to see Montante and Dobson riding from their Clarence homes to places like East Aurora.

Montante and Dobson's wife, Nancy, founded Uniland Development Co., one of the region's largest development companies. Among his many clients, Art Dobson handled some of Uniland's legal work.

Since the accident, the Dobson family - Nancy, Allison and Jonathan - have been swamped with stories that told just how generous and well-liked and respected Art Dobson was. Jonathan and his wife are expecting their first child, which will be the Dobson's first grandchild, in September.

"There are just so many great memories," Allison Dobson said. "My father was always the life of the party, but he always made everyone feel very special."

A Plainfield, N.J. resident and a 1969 Notre Dame University graduate, Dobson graduated by the University at Buffalo School of Law in 1972 and almost immediately went into private practice, working for a number of firms and with an equal number of partners. Dobson and Robert Michalak are partners in the Amherst-based Michalak & Dobson.

The Dobsons' met while Nancy Dobson was attending St. Mary's College, also in South Bend, Ind. The couple's first date was to a Rascals' concert.

The Dobsons were married on June 20, 1970, shortly after Nancy graduated from St. Mary's.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
