BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Agencies providing services to the disabled are the labor leaders in the region's nonprofit sector, employing nearly 20,000 individuals full- and part-time.
People Inc. leads the pack, with 3,149 employees, part of a 57,000-person workforce at 292 at the region's largest nonprofit agencies. The agency, which serves both individuals with developmental disabilities and seniors, was ranked No. 1 for employment on the Business First 2012 Million Dollar Nonprofits list, to be published Nov. 2.
The research report provides an analysis of all nonprofit organizations with revenue of $1 million or more in fiscal 2010, the most recent year for which complete data was available. The research is based on 990 tax data filed by each of the agencies with the Internal Revenue Service.
Business First analyzed all aspects of finances, including total revenue and expenses, how dollars are spent and executive salaries.
Among the nine agencies that reported more than 1,000 employees, People Inc. was among five that provide services to the disabled: The Resource Center in Jamestown has another 2,086; Aspire of WNY Inc. had 1,965; Heritage Centers reported 1,208; and Suburban Adult Services Inc. had 1,094.
The others include social welfare providers like the YMCA Buffalo Niagara and cultural arts groups like the Chautauqua Institution. The list also includes 18 nonprofit agencies that reported paying 500-999 employees during the year.
The Million Dollar Nonprofits report will be published in the 2012 All About Nonprofits special publication. The publication also includes a list of the 30 Top Foundations, ranked by grants paid; the Top 25 Corporate Philanthropists; and the 2012 Corporate Caring Calendar.
