State regulators have approved a $3.9 million plan by Kenmore Mercy Hospital to add two new operating rooms to the Elmwood Avenue hospital.

As previously reported in Business First, the project includes building two, 600-square-foot operating rooms, as well as expanding two existing operating rooms. Additionally, the remaining six rooms will be renovated.

James Millard, president of the Catholic Health hospital, said the operating rooms expansion is the next step in the master facilities plan and will help meet increasing demands for surgical space at the facility, primarily in orthopedics, joint replacement and neurosurgery.

The state Department of Health sent the hospital notification on April 19 the project was approved with contingencies.

Work is expected to begin by fall, with the project completed in about six months.
