For the second time in recent years, Sam Hoyt has been elected as chairman of the 10-member, binational Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority.
The authority is the governing board for the Peace Bridge and alternates its chairman's position between U.S. and Canadian directors.
At the same time, Canadian businessman Anthony Annunziata was elected vice chairman. This marks his fourth term as authority vice chairman.
Hoyt, a former New York State Assemblyman, is regional president for Empire State Development Corp. He first joined the Peace Bridge board in 2011.
Annunziata has been on the Peace Bridge board for the past seven years. He is vice president of market of the Marriott Fallsview Hotel and Spa and the Marriott Gateway hotel in Niagara Falls, Ont.
On a related matter, work on the second phase of the $10 million project to help widen the U.S. plaza has started, with Rochester's Pike Co. - the project's low bidder - handling the work. The new phase includes pier construction, the installation of structural steel and concrete decks and replacing an existing gantry with a cantilevered gantry.
Pike expects the work to be completed later this year.
