Colgate University offers the biggest payoff (in financial terms) of any college in Upstate New York.

That's according to annual rankings issued by PayScale, a compensation-data firm headquartered in Seattle.

PayScale analyzed the earning potential of graduates from 1,058 U.S. colleges, including 46 schools located within the 48 Upstate counties. The firm estimated the mid-career median salary for adults with degrees from each school, based on survey responses from graduates.

Colgate leads all Upstate colleges with a $111,000 mid-career median salary. PayScale says that half of all grads are predicted to be earning more at the midpoint of their careers, while half will be earning less.

The University at Buffalo is the highest-rated college in the immediate Buffalo area, with a mid-career median salary of $79,600 for its graduates, which puts it in 15th place in the Upstate standings.

Several Upstate colleges are not included in the rankings because of insufficient data.
