Growing Trend: Backyard Ice Rinks

Backyard ice rinks are becoming more and more popular. That's keeping a local landscaping company in business. Pace Landscaping, in Blasdell, builds ice rinks for events like the Labatt Blue Pond Hockey Tournament and now
a report in this week's Business First shows how the backyard rink business is growing. The report says Pace sold 18 rinks their first winter in 2010. The number doubled the following year. Rinks typically range from $1,800 to $3,000. That's about $10 to $12 per square foot. And it keeps Pace's employees working year round.

A health report in this week's Business First shows how about one-third of eligible Western New Yorkers have enrolled as organ and tissue donors, according to new statistics by the state department of health. This week's Business First has a chart showing the percentage of eligible donors registered in WNY. Erie County is at 32 percent, higher than the state average of 22 percent, but lower than some other regions in WNY. niagara county is at nearly 37 percent.
