The General Motors Foundation is providing grants totaling $60,000 to support six programs in the Tonawanda area that provide services and benefits for local families.

On Friday, several members of the General Motors Co. Tonawanda Engine Plant presented checks to area charities on behalf of the foundation. They included:

• United Way of Buffalo & Erie County

• American Cancer Society

• American Heart Association

• Boys and Girls Club of the Northtowns

• Buffalo Urban League

• Family Help Center (Car Seats for Communities)

After the GM Foundation announcement, guests got to see the new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. Tonawanda Engine will supply three different engines for the Silverado and GMC Sierra. Guests also had an opportunity to drive the Cadillac ATS, recently named North American Car of the Year, and the Chevrolet Malibu. Both are powered by the award-winning 2.0L Turbo engine, built at the Tonawanda plant.

The Tonawanda Engine plant employs more than 1,400, with another 600 to be added throughout 2013.
