A once famous retail address, 998 Broadway in Buffalo, is up for auction. A report in this week's Business First says there is some interest in the site. The former Sattler's department store, that also served as a Kmart for several years, will be auctioned at noon on Saturday. Cash Realty & Auctions will handle the auction for the out-of-town owner, Karnac Development. Cash Cunningham says he's already getting calls from brokers and others who are interested and he says that's a good sign. Sattler's closed in 1982. Kmart opened in 1991 and closed in 2002. The site is directly across from the historic Broadway Market.
A Tonawanda manufacturer of scales is expanding to a new niche business tied to America's growing waistline. SR Instruments makes scales for the healthcare industry and is now selling custom scales to amusement and water parks to make sure customers aren't too heavy to safely enjoy the rides. SR has sold scales to parks like Blue Bayou Waterpark in Baton Rouge, LA, and across the world to a park in Dubai. Parks use the scales to keep up their people-per-minute (PPM) numbers to keep park patrons happy with shorter lines and sometimes to get reductions in insurance claims from fewer injuries.
