BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - The Buffalo Sabres have announced the hiring of former First Niagara Bank CEO John Koelmel as president of HARBORcenter.

The announcement came around 11:05 a.m. Thursday at a press conference at First Niagara Center.

Construction of the multimillion dollar Webster Block project started back in April. When finished, it will feature a hotel and parking structure, restaurant, retail stores, and two full-sized ice rinks.

HARBORcenter is expected to open in September 2014, creating 1,600 construction jobs in the process. It is the first of it's kind in the NHL.

In a mutual decision, Koelmel was terminated from First Niagara Bank in March.
