The Easter bunny is coming to town and retailers want to cash in on the visit. How much will it cost to fill an Easter basket this year? About $145, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). Researchers say that's what the average consumer is expected to spend on the holiday.
They say Americans will celebrate Easter in style, but on budget this year. Spending will actually drop 15 cents per consumer compared to last year. Total spending is expected to top $17 billion.
Many retailers, especially seasonal ones at The Broadway Market, are hoping for a piece of that business. The NRF finds that 25 percent of consumers will shop at specialty retailers, like ones at the market, for those must-have holiday goodies. "It's the only place to get baked goods, pierogies, sauerkraut and horseradish," said Sandra Anderson. She makes the trip to the market every year, all the way from Ridgeway, Ontario.
Many shoppers, like Kathy Kapanek, say The Broadway Market has an edge over big box retailers since they're willing to shop for the right atmosphere, which includes "spending money, the hustle, the bustle, the music, the people."
There has been plenty of hustle and bustle at the market this week. Good Friday is the busiest day of the year for the Buffalo attraction.
