The annual Business First real estate issue shows how there is a wave of hotel projects in WNY, thanks to Canadian visitors. Canadians make up about 35 percent of passengers at the Buffalo airport and more than 72 percent at the Niagara Falls airport. They often account for more than half of customers at area malls. Hotel operators and developers say that translates into the need for more hotel rooms or renovations to existing properties. Smith Travel Research says hotels are running at about 70 percent occupancy this year.
If you're done shopping for gifts, now it's time to shop for food! Local businesses like the Village Sweet Shoppe in Hamburg are busy these days. The National Retail Federation says the average consumer plans to spend about $100 on food and candy. Market research company IBIS World says that will add up to $5.4 billion this holiday season.
