Ninety-four percent of the teachers in Ellicottville have been on the job for more than 10 years.

That's the highest rate in Western New York, which explains why Ellicottville is No. 1 in Business First's annual rankings of teacher experience across the eight-county region.

Only two other districts are above the 90 percent mark for teachers with more than a decade of experience: Franklinville (90.8 percent) and Wilson (90.1 percent). They're second and third respectively in this year's rankings, followed by Chautauqua Lake and Panama.

Business First rated teacher experience in all 98 districts in Western New York, a region that includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

Three ranges of experience were analyzed, using official data from the New York State Education Department. Districts with high percentages of teachers in the 11-to-20-year range and 21-or-more-year range earned positive scores, while districts with high percentages in the one-to-10-year range received negative scores.

Canaseraga has the region's lowest rating for teacher experience, with Kendall, Pine Valley, Sherman and Letchworth also in the bottom five.
