Business First School Rankings: Rochester MS

June 3, 2014 Updated Jun 3, 2014 at 8:20 AM EDT

Pittsford's two middle schools have the best academic records of all public middle schools within the eight-county Rochester Area.

Barker Road Middle School has moved up to first place in this year's Business First rankings, with Calkins Road Middle School close behind in second place.

That's a reverse from the previous three years, when Calkins Road was No. 1 and Barker Road was No. 2.

Rounding out the top five are Penfield's Bay Trail Middle School, Brighton's Twelve Corners Middle School and Honeoye Falls-Lima Middle School, holding the same positions as they did a year ago. (Click here for a quick rundown of the top 50 middle schools in the Rochester Area.)

Business First rated 97 public middle schools across the Rochester Area, using four years of standardized test data for seventh and eighth graders. All raw statistics came from the New York State Education Department.

Subject awards have been given to 12 schools, indicating that they rank among the top 10 percent of all Rochester Area middle schools in the core subjects of English or math.

Eight schools have received the maximum of two subject awards, while four have earned one apiece.

The Rochester Area is defined as a region that includes Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates counties. It contains 67 school districts.

Business First has rated schools in Western New York (the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area) since 1992. It added separate Rochester Area rankings in 2010.
