Pittsford remains the No. 1 school district in Business First's Rochester Area academic rankings -- far in front of its closest competitors.
This year's standings put Pittsford 3.70 points ahead of runner-up Honeoye Falls-Lima on the 100-point rating scale. That's a massive difference, especially when compared to the 0.06-point gap between the two frontrunners in the high school rankings released yesterday.

This is the fifth year for Business First's Rochester Area rankings, and Pittsford has stayed on top from the start in 2010. It also has been No. 1 in Business First's separate ratings of all Upstate New York districts since that annual list was initiated in 2011. (The Upstate standings for 2014 won't be released until October.)

Brighton and Penfield are third and fourth respectively in this year's Rochester Area district rankings, just as they were a year ago. Fairport, which was seventh in 2013, moves up to fifth place this time.
The top six districts -- and seven of the top eight -- are located in Monroe County. The sole exception is No. 7 Victor of Ontario County.
The Rochester Area rankings are modeled on Business First's Western New York ratings, which date to 1992. The principle is the same, with districts being evaluated on four years of test data obtained from the New York State Education Department.
The rankings reflect the overall performance of all public schools within any given district, based on test results from third grade through the senior year of high school.
Business First defines the Rochester Area as a zone of eight counties -- Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates -- containing 67 school districts.
Pittsford is the top-rated Rochester Area district in all four core subjects (English/foreign languages, mathematics, science and social studies), based on Business First's analysis of standardized test data from 2010 to 2013.
Honeoye Falls-Lima is No. 2 in English/foreign languages, science and social studies, while Penfield holds second place in math.
Ten districts have won subject awards this year, indicating that they rank among the top 10 percent of all Rochester Area districts in at least one of the four core subjects.
Brighton, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Penfield and Pittsford have swept all four awards, while Fairport and Victor have earned three apiece out of a possible four.
