East Aurora is the most affluent school district in Western New York, according to Business First¹s new rankings of socioeconomic climate.

East Aurora is the region's only district with poverty and subsidized-lunch rates below 7 percent and a district wealth ratio above 0.950. (The latter
is a measure of property and income wealth that is benchmarked to a statewide average of 1.000.)

Rounding out the top five in this year's socioeconomic climate standings are Orchard Park, Williamsville, Clarence and Amherst.

Business First's three-part rating formula is designed to identify the Western New York school districts whose students benefit from the highest
standards of living, as well as those who are economically disadvantaged.

The best rankings go to districts with low percentages of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunches, low youth poverty rates, and high
district wealth ratios.

The ratings cover all 98 districts in Western New York, a region that includes Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans
and Wyoming counties.

Buffalo holds last place in this year's socioeconomic climate rankings. It has the region's highest youth poverty rate (at 37.1 percent) and the
second-highest share of students eligible for subsidized lunches (at 77.3 percent). Lackawanna is saddled with the highest figure in the latter
category, 79.2 percent.

Also in the bottom five of the socioeconomic climate ratings are Lackawanna, Friendship, Niagara Falls and Jamestown.
