SUNY Buffalo State will be receiving a $150,000 state grant to improve the boat launch and dock at its Great Lakes Center on the Niagara River.
A college news release said the money will improve the efficiency and usefulness of the center's research efforts by expediting the launch of its research vessels.
"This improvement will save our research team valuable time and money by enabling us to launch from our own ramp even when the water levels are low," said Katherine Conway-Turner, college president.
The center uses a fleet of vessels that rely on the ramp for access to research sites, but when the water in Lake Erie is low, the ramp isn't deep enough to accommodate the fleet's three largest research vessels.
State Sen. Mark Grisanti will announce the funds at 11 a.m. Thursday at the center. He'll be accompanied by Conway-Turner and Mark Severson, dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences.
