Bankruptcy Filings Drop

Local bankruptcy filings are below the national average. A report in today's Business First shows how local bankruptcy filings are down nearly 10 percent. The report says the number of clients seeking assistance is also down. Officials say many people are getting back to work and digging out. Erie County's unemployment rate is 7.5 percent, compared to the national average of about 10 percent. The report says there's been a shift in mind-set when it comes to personal finances and many people are changing the way they run their households.

A popular Niagara Falls, NY hotel is changing hands. A report in today's Business First says Canadian Niagara Hotels will buy The Crowne Plaza Hotel on 3rd Street. Last March, a New York City investment trust bid $21 million for the hotel during a court-ordered foreclosure auction. It has been marketing the hotel ever since. Canadian Niagara Hotels has properties in both the U.S. and Canada. The hotel will remain open as it changes hands.
