Last year was a huge year for back to school shopping. But this year, consumer savvy parents are being practical. The National Retail Federation says parents splurged last year. Now they're asking kids to reuse what they can for the upcoming school season.

According to NRF's 2013 back-to-school
survey, families with school-age children will spend about $635 on back to school. That's down about $54 from last year. It is still much higher than spending levels from a few years ago. Back in 2010, consumers spent an average of $606. The number was about the same in 2011. Then in 2012, spending jumped to nearly $689 per consumer. And this year, estimates are down 8 percent to that $635.

Total spending is expected to reach $26.7 billion. Combine that with back-to-college spending and the number will reach $72.5 billion.

Researchers say shopping started earlier than usual this year with more people comparison shopping before buying.
