WNY (WKBW) - Seventy-eight high school seniors from New York's 16 westernmost counties have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

The local honorees are among 16,000 U.S. semifinalists announced this morning by National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Twenty-nine of this year's National Merit semifinalists are from the eight counties of Western New York, while 49 are from the eight-county Rochester Area.

National Merit Scholarship Corp. has run its national awards program since 1955. The 2012-2013 semifinalists were chosen from an initial pool of 1.5 million U.S. students who took last year's PSAT/NMSQT, a qualifying test.

They remain in the hunt for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships, which are worth more than $32 million. Recipients will be notified next spring.

This year's semifinalists attend 19 high schools in Western New York and 18 in the Rochester Area. One local honoree is home schooled.
