Busiest time of the year for area post offices

It's the busiest time of the year for area post offices and if you still haven't sent out that holiday gift or Christmas card you're in luck.

Workers say that if you are sending something cross-country you have one more day if you use priority shipping.

If you are sending something local, using regular mail services should get that item to its destination by Christmas.

Between Thanksgiving and New Years, 40 million cards and letters are handled at Buffalo's processing center.

That number is down about 30 percent from 10 years ago, but during that same time around eight million packages will be handled in Western New York.

Officials say that number is about a million more than last year's number of packages handled, which is no surprise when you consider how big online shopping has become.

Once Christmas is done the post office will stay busy, with returns from the holidays and tax season.
