Friends and coworkers are hosting a benefit in honor of the police officer who died during a routine diving training exercise last month.

Officer Craig Lehner was a K9 handler, so the police department is hoping to raise enough money to purchase a new K9 officer in honor of the fallen officer. Police say they will work with the Lehner family to determine the name for the dog.

The average police K9 can cost anywhere between $8,000 and $11,000. The new K9 would be the fifth K9 officer with the department.

The benefit will take place on Thursday, November 16 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Club Marcella on Pearl Street in Buffalo.

There will be a 50/50 raffle, a basket raffle, and a silent auction. Tickets include food, soft drinks and one beverage.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation can send it to the attention of the K9 Fund, Buffalo Police Federal Credit Union, 74 Franklin Street, Buffalo, N.Y. 14202.
