It's St. Valentine's Day! A time to celebrate love and affection, but to hear some people talk about this occasion, it's more of an annoyance. The gripe is the usually the same. The naysayers claim, "It's just a holiday made up by Hallmark to increase card sales!" Really?
If you look up the history of St. Valentine's Day, you see this special day started way before Hallmark. In fact, it was named after a Christian martyr by Pope Gelasius I back in 496 AD, and men were writing Valentine's Day love notes back in 1797 with versus and sketches. Nope, you can't really blame this one on Hallmark. Does Hallmark profit today from this holiday? Certainly! In this capitalistic society, I say why not! So do flower and candy shops. It's what makes the world go 'round!
We shouldn't wait until days like today to tell people in our lives how much we love them, but sometimes it takes an occasion like this to remind us not to take their love for granted. So it sets you back a few bucks. If it puts a smile on someone's face and makes a relationship stronger... isn't it worth it?
