Nickel City Con is what promoters are calling Western New York's biggest Comic Con event. Thousands attended the opening day, August 13.
"This is the first big Comic Con to ever come to Western New York," said Adam Martin, the promoter of the event.
Nickel City Con featured celebrity guests, 133 vendors, Pokemon-Go tournaments, and a costume competition, where 46 participated.

"It's been amazing," said Martin. "There's been people here from all over. Just met some people from North Carolina. It's pretty terrific!"
Martin thought of bringing something like this to Western New York after he attended one in Columbus, and realized the passion people have for this.
"Doesn't our community deserve something like Columbus, Tulsa, and Salt Lake City have?" said Martin. "We deserve one of these... and it's great!"
Those who attended the event agree.
"I hope they keep it up," said Meghan Ross. "Buffalo - come on! We're big fans. There's a lot of people who take this seriously... obviously," she said, dressed as one of the "Las Catrinas" from Sunset Overdrive, representing a protector of the children. "I'm not the only one dressed up, and it's very important to some of us to have that outlet, other than Halloween. So this is perfect."
