The Red Cross has been called in to help seventeen people -- nine adults and eight children-- after fire damaged a large building with different units in Buffalo's Riverside neighborhood.

A small dog and her owners have made it out safely.

Buffalo firefighters were called to the home on Crowley Avenue, between Condon Avenue and Ontario Street, about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Heavy smoke was coming from the house when firefighters arrived.

They were seen hauling ladders from the truck.  One firefighter was carrying Bella, the dog rescued from the fire, to safety.

A friend of the dog's owner told our breaking news photographer, they are grateful everyone made it out okay.

It's unclear how the fire started.  Firefighters are still trying to find the source of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $250,000.
