You really have to be on your toes these days! Another warning from NYS about scam artists using the IRS in a phony phone scam.

Crooks are posing as IRS or Tax Department employees trying to swindle people out of their cash and personal information. People are getting threatening and suspicious phone calls warning of deportation, seizures and fictitious tax debts.

The NYS Tax Department says it always notifies people first by mail and if it does call, agents never use scare tactics. The Tax Department also never asks for payments to be made by credit or debit cards, or, wire transfers.

The IRS says if you receive one of these bogus calls you should hang up right away and if you can, mark down the date, time and phone number and call the Tax Department right away. In New York that number is 1-518-451-1566.
