Lockport, N.Y. (WKBW)- A new way of decorating for the holidays has taken Lockport by storm. Yarn bombers have been busy decorating trees and light posts.

“We turned it into a holiday event. It’s supposed to look crazy and fun,” says Ellen Martin, owner of Sweet Sixteen Café in Lockport.

When Martin found out about yarn bombing, she didn’t hesitate to begin. Nearly 100 trees and light posts are wrapped in colorful scarfs.

“We have a knitting club here on Friday afternoons and the results are on the trees,” said Martin.

It’s an inexpensive way to spruce up the neighborhood for the holidays. This artistic expression has Lockport High School, Lock 34, ReJuvenere Medical Spa and The Dale Association jumping on board.

“So many people have got involved in it, it’s great. They’ve taken it to levels I haven’t even thought about which is fantastic,” says Martin.

One tree that stands out to Martin and her yarn-bombing friend, Mollie Roland, is sporting a pink tutu.

“It’s not perfection. It’s just about getting out there and making things interesting,” said Roland.

Main Street is covered with bright neon scarfs and now even more city trees will be cozy this winter season. The scarfs will stay wrapped until the new year.

“If they are still in good enough shape, they will be washed and donated where ever they’re wanted,” said Roland.

Lockport welcomes visitors to witness the phenomenon and enjoy the shops in downtown.

Martin says, “Come to Lockport it’s fun. We have the whole town involved in it.”
