HAMBURG, NY (WKBW) - Marine Staff Sergant John Stanz Jr. was nearly killed in Afghanistan when an enemy attack destroyed the humvee he was riding in.

Friday morning, Stanz received a very special gift, after a group called 'Vets Helping Empower Returning Disabled Vets' came together to build at $90,000 special handicapped accessible addition on his house.

The 28-year-old Marine has two Purple Hearts after nearly being killed while serving, once in Iraq in November of 2004, and later in Afghanistan.

Stanz's recovery has been long, but he's hoping to recover so he can go back into the Marines.

The renovation on Stanz's home is not completely paid for, and the group is looking for donations, volunteers and furniture to complete the project. More information on how to help can be found here.
