ALBION, NY (WKBW) - The close Orleans County village of Albion is still reeling from the deadly fire that took one life late Thursday night.
Police say the fire began just after 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening in the second floor apartment of 222 West State Street.
Crews responded within minutes and were able to contain the blaze to the upper rear of the apartment home, however 52-year-old Gloria Robinson did not make it out.
"There was a lot of yelling and screaming," described Herb Winters, who lives across the street from the apartment house.
"I saw the windows upstairs just burst and flames came through...and people were trying to get in to see if anyone was inside."
Fire crews got to Robinson fairly quickly according to witnesses, but were unable to revive her. The woman who was known as "Lackie" by her neighbors was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It was very emotional...tears everywhere. It was very emotional," said Winters, describing the scene.
Police and Fire officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
According to the owner of the apartment house, the victim, Mrs. Robinson, did not have any family living in the area.
The two other apartments in the home were mostly undamaged, and the owner hopes those tenants can move back in as early as Friday evening.
