BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Buffalo Police have identified the victim and suspect in Wednesday night's fatal shooting of a young mother on Virginia Street.

Police have charged 27-year-old Uda Hidalgo with the shooting death of 25-year-old Helena Rivera, which witnesses say happened while their own children looked on.

"This is characterized as a domestic shooting incident. These two are certainly acquainted. Hidalgo is the father of Ms. Rivera's children. They are not married," said Buffalo Police Chief Dennis Richards Thursday afternoon.

Family and witnesses tell Eyewitness News that Rivera was picking up two their children that had been staying with Hidalgo when the incident happened.

Witnesses say Rivera showed-up with her new boyfriend, leading to an argument and eventually violence.

"I heard three shots and I came out and was wondering what happened and I saw him, and she was gone....The last shot and that was it. She was gone," said one family member who witnessed the shooting but wished to remain anonymous.

Hidalgo took off on foot after the shooting, but was surrendered to police a short time later without incident. Police say he has been charged with Murder in the 2nd degree.
