Scary moments for a family traveling home to Canada last month.

Carianne and Matthew Borowski were driving home from a day of Christmas shopping. They pulled into the Duty Free parking lot to calm their screaming baby, unaware that Customs and Border Protection Agents (CBP) were performing random vehicle inspections.

Carianne got out of the car to try to calm her 4-month-old child when she tells Eyewitness News she was slammed against her vehicle.

“I hear someone tell me to get back in the vehicle,” said Carianne. “At this point, my hands are under my child with the belt off. The man jumps on me two seconds later. I had no time.”

“I could feel the car shake,” said Matthew Borowski. “I hear her screaming…they yank her back and then they tell us they’re arresting her and she’s going to jail.”

Carianne tells us she was taken to a nearby holding cell for three hours. Her family and their 4-month-old child were forced to wait.

“I was pleading with them,” said Matthew. “I was telling them that we’re good people. She’s just a mom who was trying to get her baby.”

Carianne had injuries and visited a hospital the next day.

“They determined I had multiple sprains and tissue tears from where my shoulder was pulled and my lower back,” she said.

A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson tells us the agency does not comment on pending litigation.
