During La Nina events our winter weather pattern endures more and more intense temperature swings. This means we could see longer stretches of mild weather as well as long stretches of very cold weather.
Using data from The Buffalo National Weather Service, there have been 7 winters where La Nina has been moderately strong since 1950. A majority of those winters have shown above normal temperatures, especially during November and February.
There have been 3 winters during which a strong La Nina was present. The months during a strong La Nina were even milder with 80% of the months reporting above normal temperatures. The bottom line the stronger the La Nina the greater the chance for above normal temperatures. This winters La Nina is forecast to be strong!!!
