Tops Friendly Markets is being used as the launching point for a new, healthy options sausage product.

The item, Duetts Pork & Potato Sausage, is now available in all 155 Tops supermarkets. Buffalo-based F. Wardynski & Sons Inc. is making the sausage as part of new pact it signed with the Duetts Group.

The product features pork, gourmet seasonings and chunks of russet potatoes. Wardynski is making six different flavors of the sausage, which is being sold in Tops under the Duetts brand name.

"Duetts is really a new way of thinking about sausage," said Raymond "Skip" Wardynski, president of the meat producing company.

Joseph Lopez, Duetts vice president of sales, said by using the potato and pork mixture, their product has about 40 percent less fat than a traditional sausage. Pork sausage is one of the rising food trends in the supermarket industry with the NDP Group's "National Eating Trends" survey found that pork sausage products are on pace to hit $1.8 billion in sales this year.

Lopez said Duetts' long term goal is bring its sausage products to other U.S. markets but only after it gets a better handle on the Tops sales.

"Our goal is to eventually roll it out to all the U.S.," Lopez said.

The pork and potatoes brand is the first under a new partnership pact Duetts has with Wardynski's. The Buffalo firm is best known for its own brand of hot dogs, sausages, hams and other meats.

Wardynski's and Duetts have worked together, most recently with the Buffalo firm making a "Boardwalk Griller" sausage that was sold in Canada under the Duetts brand name.
