(Clarence, NY) – Four people were arrested for allegedly being involved with a shoplifting ring at the Wal-Mart where they worked.

On Christmas Eve, New York State Troopers arrested Evelyn Smith, Tacara Lawrence, Dewayne Harrell and Latasha Morrow.

Wal-Mart estimates the suspects are responsible for the loss and/or theft of more than seven thousand dollars in merchandise.

Troopers say officials with the Wal-Mart Super center on Transit Road contacted law enforcement earlier in the day.

Throughout the last month, Wal-Mart officials began gathering evidence that the suspects were under-scanning or under-ringing merchandise. During this time, accomplices would go to checkout lines and leave the store without paying for other items.

Authorities also say the suspects would swap customers gift cards with another one that was not activated.

Evelyn Smith, 26-years-old of Buffalo, NY, was arrested for Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree. Troopers say she cost Wal-Mart about 26-hundred dollars worth of merchandise while under-scanning clients.

Authorities also say Smith posed as a customer and left the store with 16-hundred dollars of under-scanned merchandise. Other members of the shoplifting ring would act as the cashier.

Tacara, 21-years-old of Buffalo, was also arrested for Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree. Authorities say she under-scanned 25-hundred dollars worth of merchandise.

22-year-old Dewayne Harrell of Buffalo and 19-year-old Latasha Morrow of Buffalo were also arrested for petit larceny.
