Memorial Day is a day to pay tribute to all those courageous men and women who sacrificed everything in the defense of our country. It also marks the unofficial start to summer. And with a beautiful day falling on the holiday this year, some Western New Yorkers beat the heat by heading to local beaches.
"This is the first beach day of the season. And I think its pretty obvious that Western New Yorkers are ready. And they deserve it," Richi Alberts, Owner of Mickey Rat's Beach Club, said Monday.
And Western New Yorkers took full advantage of the day off and the 80 degree temperatures. Many decided to head to Mickey Rat's along the Lake Erie shoreline in Angola to soak up the sun.
"Awesome. What a day. It's beautiful out here. And I hope it stays that way for a while," Joseph Gajdosz said.
"It's beautiful, and everyone's so happy. So we're having a good time," Jaclyn Doskocz added.
From boating to volleyball to just hanging out, everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day a little differently along the lakeshore.
"Just enjoying the sun. Barbequing with my friends," Chante Richmond explained.
"To be out on the beach with good friends. What more could you ask for?" Zach Forys said.
And after weeks of rain and cold temperatures it was a day to be out and about now that the weather has finally broken.
"When the weather is constantly against you, it's actually like a light switch, because we go from zero amount of people to thousands," Alberts said.
"I mean the weather has been so bad, we haven't had a summer yet, but we do now," Doskocz added.
So for the first time in a long time, Mother Nature gave beach goers a reason to smile. Pointing to the beautiful sun, Alberts noted what he thought the day was all about. "When the sun is shining, that creates the party," he said.
