BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - Every 90 minutes, in America, someone is diagnosed with ALS.

Mike Maloney, of Buffalo, was diagnosed with ALS one year ago. The illness is also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease".

Maloney along with thousands of others, some with the disease, and others who came for moral support, walked around Delaware Park Saturday.

The goal of the "Defeat ALS Walk" is to raise money and awareness of the progressive disease that damages motor neurons in the brain and spiral chord.

Muscle weakness is one of the most recognizable signs of ALS.

Representatives from the ALS Association, Upstate New York Chapter, hope to raise $150,000 at the event. They say that money will go towards increased programming, including support groups, and helping those who do not have insurance to cover medical costs.
