CHEEKTOWAGA, NY (WKBW) -- A car crashed into two houses in Cheektowaga during Thursday morning. Police say it appears the driver, who is an elderly man, had a medical problem and while heading eastbound on Genesee Street near Beach Road he veered into oncoming traffic, hit a house knocking off the gas meter, and then ran into the house next door.

Rescuers had to free the man and his wife, who was a passenger. The two were taken to Erie County Medical Center.

Meanwhile firefighters were on the scene to shut off the gas. "It's a very dangerous situation because the eastbound vehicle went across the westbound lane so there was a possibility of a head on collision at that point," Cheektowaga Police Captain Jim Speyer said. "Then when it sheered off the gas line that's a real problem for an explosion, so we're fortunate that no one was seriously hurt in this situation."
