Dunkirk, N.Y (WKBW) According to the National Weather Service, a wind gust of 68mph was recorded in Dunkirk during the early morning hours of Monday.
The powerful wind was part of a storm that swept into Western New York from the mid-west.
Winds knocked down trees and power lines causing 5,000 National Grid customers to lose power.
Crews spent the day restoring electricity.
There were concerns that low-lying areas along the lakeshore could see flooding.
No flooding was reported, but areas like Sunset Bay in the Town of Hanover was turned into a 'sandstorm' as wind whipped up beach sand and covered homes and cars (see video).
