BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - The University at Buffalo named its' 15th President Monday at a press conference on the Amherst campus.

Satish K. Tripathi, who served as Provost at the University for the past six years, will take over the reigns as President, replacing John Simpson who served as President for the last seven years.

Tripathi reinforced the school's mission as a public research university and the important role it plays in the community.

"We have a responsibility to bring the benefits of our research and education mission to our community and to the citizens across the globe," said Tripathi.

And what about UB 2020, the University's strategic plan? Tripathi says he is committed to the big picture, which includes building up the downtown medical campus and driving economic growth, however UB 2020, according to Tripathi, boils down to three key components. Excellence, engagement and efficiency.

Tripathi admits that it will be a challenge moving forward in the face of budget cuts, but says that university leaders are already looking at ways to generate new revenue should the cuts continue.
