The University at Buffalo and Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute will lead the creation of a major research center with a $25 million federal grant.

Details of the grant will be announced during an event Wednesday morning at HWI's offices on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

According to UB, the grant will establish a major research center to be based in Buffalo, through a national collaboration that includes six major institutions outside of the region.

Leading the project is Eaton "Ed" Lattman, CEO at HWI, and a senior research scientist within UB's department of structural biology. HWI is an independent, nonprofit research organization recognized around the world for its work in the field of X-ray crystallography.

The organization has been affiliated with UB for many years, housing its structural biology department.
