Town of Royalton, NY

Thirty five year old Shane Ackerson's uniform is now a makeshift memorial in front of the Village of Medina Fire Department where he worked for nearly one year.

But it was on Rochester Road ten miles away, where Ackerson lost his life in a car crash Wednesday night.

Police say around 11p.m. the pick-up truck Ackerson was driving, somehow collided with another car travelling the same direction. Neighbors think one of the vehicles was trying to pass the other.

The vehicles then hit two trees in front of a home on 7759 Rochester Road then slammed into two parked cars in that drive way.

Ackerson was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver and passenger in the other car were taken to ECMC, one by Mercy Flight the other by ambulance.

The speed limit on Rochester Road is 55 miles per hour and although investigators have not determined if speed was a factor in the crash, residents have their suspicions that speed played a role.

Shane Anderson leaves behind a wife, Bethany and two small children, Marissa and Catherine.

Funeral arrangements for Ackerson have been finalized. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company on Ridge Road in Medina. The funeral service will also be held at the fire company on Monday at 11 a.m.

Ackerson will be laid to rest at Mount Albion Cemetery, in Albion.
