BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Two attacks involving dangerous weapons in the Queen City just this week. Believe it or not, it is not illegal to possess swords, or even machetes in New York State. In fact someone as young as 16 can easily buy one.
That fact maybe troubling to some after recent incidents.
Just yesterday, police say victim 22-year-old Mark Hawkins of Buffalo. Hawkins was treated and released last night from ECMC after suffering a large laceration to his left arm just below the shoulder. The victim was attacked by a group of men, one of them pulled out the machete and attacked the victim. The attacker is still at large.
Buffalo police also continue their search for a man, who held up a gas station, armed with a sword.
Investigators say the suspect robbed the "A-Plus" mini mart at the corner of Hertel Avenue and Colvin Avenue in North Buffalo early Tuesday morning.
Police do not think the two cases are related.
As Eyewitness News found, you can easily find these weapons online and, once again, legally buy and possess them in New York. But there are restrictions to the law. Using them an any type of threatening manner is illegal, but even so unlike a handgun, no permit is needed to buy these weapons.
Those who sell the swords, knives and machetes defend their customer's rights under this law. Most purchase them for hunting and other purposes. But there is pending legislation to limit possesion of these weapons.
