LEWISTON, N.Y. (WKBW) December 19th is the 200th anniversary of the British-led attack on Fort Niagara during the War of 1812.

During the surprise attack, the fort was captured by the British who then went on to burn the villages of Youngstown and Lewiston.

The attack on Lewiston was turning into a massacre until members of the Tuscarora Nation created a diversion and helped rescue some of the trapped residents.

Now two centuries later, a new monument is being dedicated to honor those Tuscarora Heroes.

The 3-piece larger-than-life bronze monument depicts two Tuscarora men saving a woman and child, and it is the results of years of planning by the Historical Association of Lewiston and local sculptor Susan Geissler.
