Within the next week, the third bridge will be installed over the waterways in downtown Buffalo's Canalside District.
The bridge is due to arrive in Buffalo next Tuesday, with crews starting its installation that day. The bridge's arrival is another milestone for the $23 million canal project.
Two bridges were installed earlier this summer. All three bridges mirror the one that was installed over the Commercial Slip six years ago.
With the trio of bridges, the focus will shift to installing decorative granite around the canals and putting into place the piping and concrete slabs needed to produce the seasonal ice surface. All told, the ice in the canal will total 37,000 square feet.
Tom Dee, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. president, said he hopes ice skating on the canals can begin in November, with the week around Thanksgiving considered the target date.
In the meantime, design development is underway on a series of buildings totaling 100,000 square feet and overlooking the canals, following the completion of the schematic design phase. Design development is one of the last phases before construction can begin.
The buildings will be anchored by Explore & More Children's Museum, which will occupy approximately 40,000 square feet.
Dee said the remaining 60,000 square feet will be open for a mixed-use development, including restaurant and retail space.
The buildings are due to be completed by 2016.
