The Town of Hamburg took over Woodlawn Beach and made some major improvements this season.

Hamburg, N.Y. (WKBW)- You don't have to go too far to find to find what some people call a bit of paradise.

"I think this is one of the best beaches in this area. The sand is beautiful, it's really big and it's secluded and it also has wonderful nature around here," Hamburg Resident and Woodlawn Beach Intern Rachel Ring said.

Many said Woodlawn Beach State Park has everything you could ever want in a beach vacation, right here in Western New York. Although the area is still owned by the state, the Town of Hamburg took over the day-to-day operations. Town Supervisor Steven Walters said they have some pretty exciting plans including beach tennis tournaments, day camps for kids and two big surprises.

"We're working with some companies to do other activities like helicopter rides, parasailing, rentals on the beach and we have some volleyball stands up," Walters said.

Tucker Curtin, owner of Dug's Dive at the Small Boat Harbor just a few mile away, said he is opening a beautiful beach club and restaurant called Woody's right on the water at Woodlawn.

"When a guest comes into our beach club we set you up with a chair a towel and we'll bring the food right down." Curtin said.

Mark and Dian Keicher who visited the beach said Woodlawn is something special.

"The expanse of the beach and the skyline and it's a treasure for Buffalo. It's hidden that's for sure. You have to search to find it," the Keichers said.

Many agree the improvements at Woodlawn are just another step in the right direction for the development of Buffalo's waterfront.

"Our waterfront is the most beautiful thing in the world. We have to embrace it and we have to enjoy it," Curtin said.
