Woodlawn, NY (WKBW)

It was an emotional group that raised the Patriot Flag Tuesday at the Woodlawn Firehall along Route 5 in the Town of Hamburg.

The flag has crossed the country in support of all that have lost their lives as a result of the terror attacks on 9-11.

Here's some background on the flag and where it's been-- Courtesy www.thepatriotflag.us :

The PATRIOT FLAG (30 X 55.5 foot - 75 pounds) will tour the United States in honor of the fallen on 9/11/01.
It also represents the resolve of AMERICANS and our quest to live free.
A message is conveyed: WE STILL STAND UNITED AND WE ALWAYS WILL.
The flag also honors the public safety personnel on the job today willing to risk their lives for others.

The Patriot Flag was donated to the WORLD MEMORIAL by a group of businessmen (Escondido Auto Park Association)
from Escondido California through the American Legion Post J.B.Clark Post 149.
What began at an idea at a funeral for a WWII Veteran (Alex Kapitanski)
in Oceanside CA., the flag has evolved into a national project of patriotism. It is a testament to what happened on 9/11/2001.

The cross country tour began in San Diego on August 10, 2010 and ends back in San Diego in September 2011.
The flag belongs to ALL Americans and has no special connection other than it is big and it is touring the U.S.A.
When the flag returns to California on Sept 5th, it will be on display and or flown in cities to be announced.

The flag will be transported by uniformed personnel from this point forward
and will be transferred to the agencies hosting the flag with full honor and glory in a ceremonial method.
After the tour, the flag will travel to Pennsylvania, New York City, and The Pentagon - Arlington Virginia on 9/11/11.
It will then travel to Washington D.C. on 9/12, Arlington Cemetery on 9/13, and Fort McHenry, MD on 9/14/11.

An OFFICIAL retirement ceremony (Date To Be Announced) will be performed back in Escondido CA.
where the flag flew for six months before it was donated.
It will then be placed on display in an appropriate honorable location to be announced.

As this flag tours the country, all 50 states in the union,
it will send a message to the world and the families
of the loved ones that were lost on 9/11/01.
UNITED WE STAND: "We have NOT FORGOTTEN."

Criss-crossing the country, the flag honors the men and women on the job today protecting the citizens they serve.
This flag project is not a as important as other flags touring the United States and is not an historic event.
However, it is an American micro-historic event.
And, the flag should garner no more respect than the 3X5 or 4X6 flag flying at your local Post Office.
